We are looking for a candidate holding a Master’s degree (or an equivalent foreign qualification) who is interested in pursuing a research career in quantum error correction at the International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies (ICTQT), University of Gdańsk. The position is particularly suitable for graduates in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantum technologies, or related fields.
The position is offered within the project “Bridging Quantum and Classical Error Correction for Scalable Fault-tolerant Quantum Computing” (QuBriC), implemented under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks, Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101312335). The research will be conducted under the supervision of Markus Grassl (Project Lead and Co-supervisor) and Marcin Pawłowski (Co-supervisor). The project focuses on developing methods that bridge quantum and classical error correction to improve the reliability and scalability of quantum computers.
The doctoral candidate’s research will focus on algebraic constructions of quantum error-correcting codes adapted to realistic channel and noise models. The work will include analysing code properties, developing new algebraic constructions, evaluating decoding efficiency, and deriving bounds on code parameters. Expected outcomes include new code construction methods, evaluation criteria, and open libraries of quantum codes and benchmarks.
The doctoral candidate will participate in QuBriC’s international research and training programme, including research secondments at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) and the company Alice & Bob (France). During the first three years, the candidate will combine employment within the project with doctoral education at the Doctoral School at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk. The fourth year, outside the period of employment in the project, will be funded by the Doctoral School allowing to continue the doctoral studies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Carry out full-time scientific research on the project’s objectives and contribute to the relevant QuBriC work packages and deliverables.
- Follow doctoral-school requirements, the QuBriC training programme and an individual career development plan, consistent with the employment contract.
- Undertake two planned academic/industrial secondments (Germany and France), participate in network events and present results at seminars and conferences.
- Cooperate with main and co-supervisors, academic and industry partners, and the ICTQT research and administrative teams.
About the MSCA Doctoral Networks
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks fund international consortia of universities, research organisations and companies that jointly recruit, train and supervise doctoral candidates, combining academic research with exposure to non-academic environments through secondments. QuBriC is the first pan-European Doctoral Network entirely dedicated to quantum error correction (QEC): it brings together 16 academic institutions and 7 quantum-computing companies from 11 countries to bridge classical coding theory and quantum information science, covering the full QEC stack from theory and code design to decoding, hardware integration and experimental validation. Over 48 months, QuBriC will recruit and train 15 doctoral candidates, each enrolled in a doctoral school and benefiting from joint supervision and mandatory academic and industrial secondments. The Network is funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101312335).
Basic information about ICTQT UG
The International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies (ICTQT) is a joint research unit of the University of Gdańsk (UG) and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (IQOQI-Vienna) subordinated to the UG Rector. ICTQT was established in 2018 as a part of the International Research Agendas program co-financed by the Foundation for Polish Science. The founders of ICTQT are Marek Zukowski and Pawel Horodecki.
ICTQT is a pioneering and leading quantum information research center in Poland, focused on quantum communication and new computing techniques. The purpose of the ICTQT is to conduct scientific research and development works under the adopted ICTQT Research Agenda, in an international academic environment and at the highest academic level, with due regard for high ethical standards, good academic practice in particular, and to disseminate knowledge.
ICTQT is located in Gdansk, near Gdynia and Sopot, which together form Tri-City.
