Gdańsk Nobel Prize for 2025 goes to ICTQT Researcher, Michał Horodecki!
Professor Michał Horodecki, the Head of the New Quantum Resources and Thermodynamics Group at the International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies of the University of Gdańsk, has been awarded the Jan Heweliusz Scientific Prize of the City of Gdańsk for 2025 in the category of natural and exact sciences. The distinction, often referred to as the „Gdańsk Nobel Prize”, honors outstanding scholars whose work has had a significant impact on science, culture and society.
The award has been presented annually for nearly four decades and recognises achievements in two broad fields: natural and exact sciences, as well as the humanities and social sciences. For 2025, the second laureate was Professor Tomasz Bogusławski from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
Professor Horodecki was recognised for his fundamental contributions to quantum information theory, particularly his pioneering work on quantum entanglement and quantum information resources. His research has shaped modern understanding of how information behaves at the quantum level and laid theoretical foundations for technologies such as quantum computing and ultra-precise measurements.
During the award ceremony, the importance of intellectual courage, creativity and openness to unexplored scientific territory was emphasized as a defining feature of Professor Horodecki’s career. In his acceptance remarks, he highlighted the role of his family, mentors and academic environment in shaping his scientific path.
